TUSU Elections 2024 are coming! Get paid over £25k to lead your SU!

Teesside University Students’ Union (TUSU) is led by students for students and each February, any current Teesside University student* can run in the elections to decide:

  • The three people who get paid over £25,000 for and serve for at least one year overseeing the running of TUSU, leading on campaigns, and representing ALL students to the most senior figures at the University, including the Board of Governors and Vice-Chancellor. You may run for ONE of the three Student Officer positions – President Education, President Wellbeing or President International.
  • In a fourth, separate election, students can ALSO run to be one of the six people who represent all Teesside Uni students on the big stage at the NUS National Conference 2024. You will join current Student Officers for the two-day event and speak up on the big issues facing the national student movement, as well as having your say in elections to the next national student leaders.

These are unique opportunities to gain new skills and experience while contributing to the democratic process at Teesside University! Past experience is less important than a willingness to work hard and a passion for helping your fellow students.

Find out more, ask questions, sign up for TUSU Elections updates and get all the key dates you will need if you are thinking of becoming a candidate through tees-su.org.uk/elections.

Campaigns Corner

We are a Students' Union who pride ourselves on running "real world" campaigns that focus on the issues of most importance to Teesside University students. In Semester 2, this will include:

  • Gathering feedback on student experiences of accommodation and providing support to students with this important issue.
  • Giving you opportunities to speak to the Student Officers and other representatives of TUSU in person or online about your student experience through Talk to TUSU and tees-su.org.uk/feedback.
  • Providing advice and support with the important and often misunderstood issue of academic misconduct, including dedicated support sessions where you can speak to the President Education and staff from SU Student Support (SUSS).
  • Giving students the chance to speak to each other and get/give mutual support at weekly Students Supporting Students sessions.
  • Helping students start their day the right way with FREE breakfast on selected weekdays in Semester 2.
  • New campaigns trying to reduce cases of students not attending lectures and seminars then being discontinued from their course and trying to get students more active to improve their wellbeing.
  • Much, much more besides!

Find out more throughtees-su.org.uk/officers and keep an eye ontees-su.org.uk/events or our social media channels for details of upcoming campaign dates.

Advice for students who are still seeking the right accommodation

Even though Semester 1 is well underway, we know some students will still be looking for appropriate accommodation. It is increasingly difficult to find in central Middlesbrough. You may need to widen your search area and live outside of the town. This will mean travelling to campus daily, so you must also factor in the travel costs for each site on top of your rent and living costs. We have a wealth of information and useful links on our dedicated accommodation page, tees-su.org.uk/accommodation, and there are also useful tips below.

  • Accommodation outside of Middlesbrough will not always be student accommodation.
  • Bills will not always be included in your accommodation; make sure you know how to pay and what you owe.
  • Before you sign anything, get your contract checked by our advisers.
  • Make sure you know what you're signing up for. Is your property furnished or unfurnished?
  • If you are going to live with your family, check the local school for spaces.
  • More and more students need help with a guarantor before being able to secure a suitable property. Check out the Housing Hand and Rent Guarantor websites for potential help with this.
  • Some of the main property search websites are: www.rightmove.co.uk, www.zoopla.co.uk,   and www.onthemarket.com.

Public Transport:

There is plenty of public transport from the surrounding areas into Middlesbrough itself. Both buses and trains run daily from most areas, and often, weekly or monthly passes can be purchased at a reduced rate.

Temporary Accommodation:

Whilst looking for accommodation, you may need somewhere to stay temporarily. Below are some options for this:

Air BnB – This is a popular website that allows you to rent a room or entire property. If you are here with friends or family members, this is a good option as you can split the rent and choose a property size to suit your needs.

Hostels - A hostel is a great option for students travelling on a budget. You can often get a bed in a shared dorm for around £20 - £30 per night.

independenthostels.co.uk/hostels-with-private-rooms/ has hundreds of hostels across the country. Find one near you, call them or book it online.

hostelworld.com/st/hostels/europe/england/ may also be a useful site to take a look at.

Hotels - If you're looking for a bit more luxury, then staying in a hotel is an option. However, this option is often more expensive, with rates starting at around 50 pounds per night. Check out the links below for more.

Changes and additions to the TUSU Board of Trustees

The TUSU Board of Trustees is led by the three Student Officers. They are joined by four External Trustees who are experienced and distinguished figures from sectors such as business, charity, education, and Local Government to provide expert advice and insight. The board is completed by three Student Trustees who are current TU students who provide vital grassroots feedback. The Board has ultimate responsibility for the governance and smooth running of the organisation and has the final say on all major strategic decisions.

We are delighted to confirm that current Teesside University students and School Representatives/ current and former TUSU societies leaders Joshua Williams, Dan Scrafton and Nixon Christian were appointed to the Board as Student Trustees towards the end of 2023.

Additionally, we were pleased to add Charlotte Hughes to an already exceptional set of External Trustees. She brings invaluable knowledge from her years working in the voluntary sector.

Find out more about the board by clicking here and stay tuned to their web pages as well as our social media for regular updates from the Board in 2024.

Make great savings all year with the TOTUM app and card!

We know that most students are feeling the pinch right now as living costs spiral. One great way of saving on eating out, fashion, music, cinema, travel, and more is the TOTUM app and card. It is the only OFFICIAL student discount app and card, the only one offered by the National Union of Students (NUS) and the only one we recommend!

Aside from all of that, you will be helping your TUSU as we receive payments from NUS depending on how many students download the TOTUM app, how often they use it and the number of students who upgrade to the complete TOTUM package! All that money is poured back into making your SU even better!

Student Safety Tips

Your SU works closely with the University and a range of external agencies such as Cleveland Police, Cleveland Fire and the NHS to try to keep all students safe and well. It remains important to keep taking sensible precautions to minimise the risk to both yourself and other students.

Check out our tips for staying over the freshers period and throughout semester one.

  • If you are living in student accommodation, make sure you always remember to lock windows and doors when you head out securely.
  • Try to keep anything particularly valuable out of sight when you leave your student house.
  • If you find that the property you are living in does not have a fire, carbon monoxide and burglar alarms or an up-to-date gas certificate, speak to your letting agent or landlord immediately. You can also get online help with accommodation issues through our SU Student Support team by e-mailing: suss@tees-su.org.uk
  • If you are new to Middlesbrough or Teesside, try to stay in well-lit areas and groups when you head out after dark. Fellow students can also probably give useful advice on areas of the town that you may wish to avoid.
  • Drink responsibly and avoid illegal drugs, especially if they are being supplied by someone you do not know. NEVER DRINK/ TAKE DRUGS AND THEN DRIVE!
  • Be aware of possible drink spiking, especially if you are in unfamiliar venues with new people.
  • Middlesbrough Council has strict rules on behaviour in public, especially in the town centre. Please be aware that if you are deemed to have behaved unacceptably in public spaces, you may face a fine of several hundred pounds.
  • Like any UK town, Middlesbrough, sadly, has issues with begging in the town centre. Cleveland Police and Middlesbrough Council advise you not to give money to people who ask for it and avoid lengthy engagement with people who beg, especially if they are aggressive. A range of support is available from professional agencies for people who are in these situations; assisting them should be left to the experts.
