Welcome from the Student Officers

A very warm welcome to the October/November update from Teesside University Students' Union (TUSU). We get in touch every month through the academic year with our latest news and events unless you ask us to stop by unsubscribing.

In this edition, we are looking ahead to a busy and exciting period of activities, campaigns, and day/ evening events, including YOUR chance to hear from us AND have your say at the TUSU Members Meeting. We are so keen to see you there; you can get a code for FREE Domino's Pizza if you attend the whole meeting*. There is also our first-ever Cultural Festival, giving students from all backgrounds a chance to learn, share and have fun together.

We will continue to provide free breakfast for current enrolled TU students throughout October and get out around campus each week, giving you the chance to provide us with feedback and support. Then, if it's Halloween fun you're after, we've got a string of spooktacular socials, including the legendary Nightmare on Southfield Road; find out more in the events article below.

We also hope you will check out the brand new Unitemps service, which, working with the University, can help you find part-time work and become more employable. Check out when they will be in the TUSU Building to tell you more and help you here.

And please take the chance to give us feedback about some proposed changes to our Board of Trustees which we believe will make it even more efficient and effective for students in the future.

Have a great month, and, as always, make sure TUSU is right at the heart of your student life! We are here for you however things are going, find our building opposite The Curve and next to Teesside Uni Library!

Have your say & get free food* at the TUSU Members Meeting

The TUSU Members Meeting (formerly known as the AGM) takes place once a year and is open to ALL current, enrolled Teesside University students. It takes place on Tuesday, 19th November from 5 pm and, although it is a very important meeting, it usually takes no longer than 90 minutes. Best of all...we are so keen for you to attend that we are offering 1 x FREE Domino's pizza to as many of you who attend as we possibly can.

It is a chance to:

  • Hear from your Student Officers about their campaign priorities for the year and how they will ensure YOUR voice is heard by the University.
  • Give feedback and ask questions of them.
  • Make suggestions for how TUSU can be even better.
  • Have a say in the governance of the Students' Union and the way the 2025 TUSU Elections are run.
  • Pick up a digital code (while stocks last) for 1 x FREE Domino's Pizza if you attend the whole meeting*

Keep monitoring tees-su.org.uk/agm for key papers you should read before the meeting and more information.

* PLEASE NOTE: The meeting is usually well attended, and supplies of codes for free pizza are limited. We cannot guarantee that everyone who attends the meeting will receive one.

* PLEASE NOTE: You MUST bring your Teesside University Student ID card (TUSC) to the meeting to be admitted.

Have your say on improvements to our Board

The TUSU Board of Trustees is led by our current elected Student Officers and includes External and Student Trustees; it is ultimately responsible for the governance and running of the Students’ Union and has the final say on all the biggest decisions around development and spending.

The External Trustees are experienced. distinguished figures from a wide range of professional backgrounds, including business, charity, education, finance, and students’ unions. They share their vast expertise and wisdom to assist with high-quality decision-making and governance.

Meanwhile, the Student Trustees are current Teesside Uni students who provide vital advice, grassroots feedback, and wider student opinion for the benefit of the rest of the board.

As part of our ongoing work to improve the effectiveness and impact of the Board, TUSU is proposing:

  • An increase in the number of External Trustees to six in total.
  • An increase in the number of Student Trustees to four in total.
  • Alongside existing arrangements for who can chair the Board of Trustees (usually a Student Officer or Student Trustee) a new option for the Board of Trustees to appoint an External Trustee as Co-Chair of the Board at their discretion.

Why are we proposing these changes?

  • To increase the range of expert advice and support available to Student Officers from External Trustees with an even wider range of expertise and backgrounds.
  • To increase the amount of participation in the board from current students and get even greater grassroots feedback for the benefit of other members of it.
  • To ensure we have robust and flexible options for who takes on the important responsibilities of chairing the Board. An experienced co-chair would work in partnership with the Student Officer or Trustee Chair to ensure board meetings run even more effectively for the benefit of all of the students we serve.

What do we want you to do?

TUSU is led by students for students, so between Friday, 18th October and Friday, 1st November, we want YOU to have your say about these important proposed changes. Simply visit tees-su.org.uk/botfeedback and give us your views. After the form closes, we will take them into account before putting a final proposal on the above to the TUSU Members Meeting on Tue, 19th November, for final feedback from students who attend it. E-mail: governance@tees-su.org.uk with questions about the above and to see the full draft proposal.

Student Safety Tips

Your SU works closely with the University and a range of external agencies such as Cleveland Police, Cleveland Fire and the NHS to try to keep all students safe and well. It remains important to keep taking sensible precautions to minimise the risk to both yourself and other students.

Check out our tips for staying throughout the academic year.

  • If you are living in student accommodation, make sure you always remember to lock windows and doors when you head out securely.
  • Try to keep anything particularly valuable out of sight when you leave your student house.
  • If you find that the property you are living in does not have a fire, carbon monoxide and burglar alarms or an up-to-date gas certificate, speak to your letting agent or landlord immediately. You can also get online help with accommodation issues through our SU Student Support team by e-mailing: suss@tees-su.org.uk.
  • If you are new to Middlesbrough or Teesside, try to stay in well-lit areas and groups when you head out after dark. Fellow students can also probably give useful advice on areas of the town that you may wish to avoid.
  • Drink responsibly and avoid illegal drugs, especially if they are being supplied by someone you do not know. NEVER DRINK/ TAKE DRUGS AND THEN DRIVE!
  • Be aware of possible drink spiking, especially if you are in unfamiliar venues with new people.
  • Middlesbrough Council has strict rules on behaviour in public, especially in the town centre. Please be aware that if you are deemed to have behaved unacceptably in public spaces, you may face a fine of several hundred pounds.
  • Like any UK town, Middlesbrough, sadly, has issues with begging in the town centre. Cleveland Police and Middlesbrough Council advise you not to give money to people who ask for it and avoid lengthy engagement with people who beg, especially if they are aggressive. A range of support is available from professional agencies for people who are in these situations; assisting them should be left to the experts.
