Welcome from the Student Officers

Welcome to the latest update from Teesside University Students' Union (TUSU). During the academic year, we contact you monthly with our latest news and events unless you ask us to stop by unsubscribing.

We want to start by wishing everyone a happy and successful New Year. We hope you had at least some time to relax and recharge over the holidays. We're excited to meet new and returning students in the coming weeks and hope to see as many of you as possible in the TUSU Building, which is opposite The Curve and beside Teesside University Library in Campus Heart.

In this edition, we're looking forward to the main week of day and evening activities and events for TUSU Refresh. This is a perfect way to get support, make new friends, and settle back into university life as Semester 2 gets underway.

Even though it might mean some of us lose our jobs this summer, we hope as many people as possible consider running in the TUSU Elections. You can enter as a candidate from Monday,  17th, to Friday, 21st February, so the clock is ticking. Now is the time to ensure you really understand the role you are running for. Consider whether now is the right time to stand and build up your knowledge of all aspects of the Students' Union.

We can tell you from our own experience that being a President is an amazing opportunity, BUT it's also very hard work and requires a range of key characteristics and skills, so make sure you do your prep and homework before you run!

We hope you have a great month, but remember that however things are going, TUSU is here to support you and provide a range of events, services and spaces.

The TUSU Elections countdown is on! Nominations open on 17th Feb!

Teesside University Students' Union (TUSU) is led by students for students, and from Monday, 17th February, most current enrolled students at the Uni* can run in our elections to find the next three people who oversee how it's run on behalf of all students. You will also represent them to the most senior figures at the institution, such as the Board of Governors and Vice-Chancellor, along with his top team.

These are paid, full-time opportunities to make a real difference and gain the kind of experience and skills other students can only dream about, and you can now get full information on running in the elections and the rules by which they are run on tees-su.org.uk/elections. It also includes a timeline of key dates that potential candidates need to be aware of and tasks you must complete to enter the elections race.

Most importantly, it provides a full summary of the roles and responsibilities of each of the three Student Officer roles, which you should read carefully if you are thinking of running.

Before all that, though, we would urge anyone who is already considering running for a role (you may only stand for ONE of the positions) to email: elections@tees-su.org.uk with your initial questions and to consider the following carefully:

  • Is 2025 the right time for me to run, or should you get to know the students, the University and the Students' Union better and run the year my course is due to end instead? Perhaps you would benefit from being a student rep or a lead member of a society before becoming an election candidate, for example, so you can really gain a strong understanding of TUSU and the issues your fellow students face.
  • TUSU always urges students to complete their studies BEFORE becoming Student Officers. If you would take a break from your course to serve as President, would that be the right move for you?
  • You need no specific experience or skills to be a Student Officer, and lots of training and support will be available. However, it is important to be passionate about making a difference for students, willing to work long, sometimes unsociable hours, and confident in speaking in high-level meetings and to large groups.

PLEASE NOTE: A range of circumstances may prevent a student from participating in the elections and becoming a Trustee of TUSU, even if they are fully enrolled. The elections web page will provide full details. The elections email account can also offer confidential advice if you have questions about your eligibility.

Calling final year students! Have your say about your time here!

The National Student Student Survey (NSS) is a chance for Teesside University students in their final year to complete the NSS. If you are studying a course leading to undergraduate credits or qualifications, you may be eligible to complete the NSS.

Both the University and TUSU pay close attention to the feedback, and it has a real impact on the change and improvement we each make. You could also help your course cohort win a very special graduation package, so make sure you spare a few minutes to give your feedback.

Student Safety Tips

Your SU works closely with the University and various external agencies, such as Cleveland Police, Cleveland Fire, and the NHS, to try to keep all students safe and well. It remains important to continue taking sensible precautions to minimise the risk to yourself and other students.

Check out our tips for staying throughout the academic year.

  • If you live in student accommodation, remember to lock windows and doors securely when you leave.
  • Try to keep anything particularly valuable out of sight when you leave your student house.
  • If you find that the property you are living in does not have a fire, carbon monoxide and burglar alarms or an up-to-date gas certificate, speak to your letting agent or landlord immediately. You can also get online help with accommodation issues through our SU Student Support team by e-mailing: suss@tees-su.org.uk.
  • If you are new to Middlesbrough or Teesside, try to stay in well-lit areas and groups when you head out after dark. Fellow students can also probably give useful advice on areas of the town that you may wish to avoid.
  • Drink responsibly and avoid illegal drugs, especially if they are being supplied by someone you do not know. NEVER DRINK/ TAKE DRUGS AND THEN DRIVE!
  • Be aware of possible drink spiking, especially if you are in unfamiliar venues with new people.
  • Middlesbrough Council has strict rules on behaviour in public, especially in the town centre. Please be aware that if you are deemed to have behaved unacceptably in public spaces, you may face a fine of several hundred pounds.
  • Unfortunately, like any UK town, Middlesbrough has issues with begging in the town centre. Cleveland Police and Middlesbrough Council advise against giving money to people who ask for it and avoid lengthy engagement with beggars, especially aggressive ones. Professional agencies offer a range of support for people in these situations; assisting them should be left to the experts.
