Welcome from the Student Officers

A very warm welcome to the latest update from Teesside University Students’ Union (TUSU), we get in touch every month during the academic year with our latest news and events unless you ask us to stop by unsubscribing.

In this edition, we have a final reminder about the short, simple, but VERY IMPORTANT TUSU Members Meeting 2025. It takes place on Tue, 19th November from 5pm on the second floor of the TUSU Building and we hope to see as many of you as possible there. You can hear from us, ask questions about our priorities, share your views and, of course, give yourself a shot of FREE Domino's Pizza*. More in the item further down this edition.

We're also looking forward to another very busy month of activities, campaigns and day and evening events in the TUSU Building, the wider Middlesbrough campus and further afield. AND...if you’re already starting to think about running in the TUSU Elections 2025, we have early info on what to consider and what to read NOW!

We also want to remind you again that current, enrolled Teesside Uni students can get FREE BREAKFAST courtesy of your SU from Tuesday to Thursday mornings between 9 am and 10.15 am until the festive break. Head to The Terrace on the first floor of the TUSU Building (find us opposite The Curve and beside TU Library in Campus Heart on the Middlesbrough campus) to start your day the right way! Remember to bring your Teesside Uni student ID card!

Have a safe, happy, successful month and, as always, make sure TUSU (in person or online) is at the heart of your student life!

The latest from your School Reps

Hello from your School Representatives! We trust that everyone is adjusting well to the new semester. It has been wonderful to connect with some of you already and to gather your feedback during our on-campus and online sessions. We have been collaborating with our staff to ensure that your feedback reaches the appropriate departments. Discussions have taken place regarding issues related to policy changes, communications, and accessibility. Additionally, we have engaged with school staff teams to address matters concerning personal tutors, timetabling, student engagement, and facilities. Ongoing discussions are in progress, and we will keep you all informed about the outcomes shortly.

We are eager to connect with more of you, so we invite you to join our on-campus and online sessions. We will be hosting at least one session each week until the semester concludes. For further details and booking information, please visit the SU website. If you have any questions or need assistance on how to reach us, feel free to email: representation@tees-su.org.uk, and we will gladly help you.

Make a BIG difference leading TUSU next year!

Teesside University Students' Union (TUSU) is led by students for students, and each February/March, any current enrolled student at the Uni* can run in our elections to find the next three people who oversee how it's run on behalf of all students and represent them to the most senior figures at the institution such as the Board of Governors and Vice-Chancellor along with his top team.

These are paid, full-time opportunities to make a real difference and gain the kind of experience and skills other students can only dream about, and we will be adding full information on running in the elections and the rules by which they are run to tees-su.org.uk/elections before the end of November, we will also include a timeline of key dates that candidates need to be aware of and tasks you must complete to enter the elections race. Most importantly, we will provide a full summary of the roles and responsibilities of each of the three Student Officer roles, which you should read carefully if you are thinking of running.

Before all that, though, we'd urge anyone who is already considering running for a role (you may only stand for ONE of the positions) to email: elections@tees-su.org.uk with your initial questions and to consider the following carefully:

  • Is 2025 the right time for me to run, or should you get to know the students, the University and the Students' Union better and run the year my course is due to end instead? Perhaps you would benefit from being a student rep or a lead member of a society before becoming an election candidate, for example, so you can really gain a strong understanding of TUSU and the issues your fellow students face.
  • TUSU always urges students to complete their studies BEFORE becoming a Student Officer. If you would be taking a break from your course to serve as a President, is that the right move for you?
  • You need no specific experience or skills to be a Student Officer, and lots of training and support will be available, BUT...it IS important to be passionate about making a difference for students, willing to work long, sometimes unsociable hours, and confident speaking in high-level meetings and to large groups.

PLEASE NOTE: There are a range of circumstances which may prevent a student from participating in the elections and becoming a Trustee of TUSU, even if they are fully enrolled. We will have full details of these on the elections web page later this month and can also offer confidential advice if you have questions about your eligibility through the elections email account.

Student Safety Tips

Your SU works closely with the University and a range of external agencies such as Cleveland Police, Cleveland Fire and the NHS to try to keep all students safe and well. It remains important to keep taking sensible precautions to minimise the risk to both yourself and other students.

Check out our tips for staying throughout the academic year.

  • If you are living in student accommodation, make sure you always remember to lock windows and doors when you head out securely.
  • Try to keep anything particularly valuable out of sight when you leave your student house.
  • If you find that the property you are living in does not have a fire, carbon monoxide and burglar alarms or an up-to-date gas certificate, speak to your letting agent or landlord immediately. You can also get online help with accommodation issues through our SU Student Support team by e-mailing: suss@tees-su.org.uk.
  • If you are new to Middlesbrough or Teesside, try to stay in well-lit areas and groups when you head out after dark. Fellow students can also probably give useful advice on areas of the town that you may wish to avoid.
  • Drink responsibly and avoid illegal drugs, especially if they are being supplied by someone you do not know. NEVER DRINK/ TAKE DRUGS AND THEN DRIVE!
  • Be aware of possible drink spiking, especially if you are in unfamiliar venues with new people.
  • Middlesbrough Council has strict rules on behaviour in public, especially in the town centre. Please be aware that if you are deemed to have behaved unacceptably in public spaces, you may face a fine of several hundred pounds.
  • Like any UK town, Middlesbrough, sadly, has issues with begging in the town centre. Cleveland Police and Middlesbrough Council advise you not to give money to people who ask for it and avoid lengthy engagement with people who beg, especially if they are aggressive. A range of support is available from professional agencies for people who are in these situations; assisting them should be left to the experts.
