Welcome from the Student Officers

A very warm welcome to the latest update from Teesside University Students' Union. We get in touch every month during the academic year with our news and events unless you ask us to stop by unsubscribing.

In this edition, we, like everyone we would imagine, are looking forward to a chance to relax and refresh at least some of the time over the upcoming festive holiday period. TUSU reverts to holiday opening hours from Sat, 14th December. We have full details of how this affects the availability of our building, services and spaces along with what to do in an emergency here.

We are also excited to preview activities and events taking place during TUSU Refresh 2025 at the end of January, AND we are firing the starting gun on the TUSU Elections 2025 race! We hope you will get involved in both, but we would urge you to really do your research and find out everything you can about TUSU and the Student President roles before running in the elections. There are many tips on how to do that in the elections article further down or on the elections minisite.

There is also a fun-packed holiday special of the TUSU Podcast and we are celebrating some of the many students who have contributed to and gained from being involved in their SU over the past 12 months!

Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, we hope EVERYONE has a safe, happy holiday, and we wish you all a prosperous 2025. Make sure TUSU is right at the heart of your student life again next year!

Stay safe and make the most of the holidays!

We hope everyone has a safe, happy holiday and gets time to do the things you want! Our holidays minisite has plenty of top tips on making the most of the extended break with things you can do for free or at a very low cost AND suggestions for how you might help others over the holiday period. It might be particularly useful info for those who are remaining in Middlesbrough over the holidays or are going to be spending some of their time alone.

There's also information on staying safe and what to do in an emergency situation over the holidays, which we hope will help those who need it.

TUSU Elections 2025 are coming!

Teesside University Students' Union (TUSU) is led by students for students, and each February/March, any current enrolled student at the Uni* can run in our elections to find the next three people who oversee how it's run on behalf of all students and represent them to the most senior figures at the institution such as the Board of Governors and Vice-Chancellor along with his top team.

These are paid, full-time opportunities to make a real difference and gain the kind of experience and skills other students can only dream about, and you can now get full information on running in the elections and the rules by which they are run on tees-su.org.uk/elections which also include a timeline of key dates that candidates need to be aware of and tasks you must complete to enter the elections race.

Most importantly, it provides a full summary of the roles and responsibilities of each of the three Student Officer roles, which you should read carefully if you are thinking of running.

Before all that, though, we would urge anyone who is already considering running for a role (you may only stand for ONE of the positions) to email: elections@tees-su.org.uk with your initial questions and to consider the following carefully:

  • Is 2025 the right time for me to run, or should you get to know the students, the University and the Students' Union better and run the year my course is due to end instead? Perhaps you would benefit from being a student rep or a lead member of a society before becoming an election candidate, for example, so you can really gain a strong understanding of TUSU and the issues your fellow students face.
  • TUSU always urges students to complete their studies BEFORE becoming a Student Officer. If you would be taking a break from your course to serve as a President, is that the right move for you?
  • You need no specific experience or skills to be a Student Officer, and lots of training and support will be available, BUT...it IS important to be passionate about making a difference for students, willing to work long, sometimes unsociable hours, and confident speaking in high-level meetings and to large groups.

PLEASE NOTE: There are a range of circumstances which may prevent a student from participating in the elections and becoming a Trustee of TUSU, even if they are fully enrolled. We will have full details of these on the elections web page later this month and can also offer confidential advice if you have questions about your eligibility through the elections email account.

The latest from your School Reps

We can hardly believe that semester 1 is almost over! It has been a pleasure meeting all of you during our face-to-face and online drop-in sessions. Thank you for sharing your feedback; we truly could not enhance the experience without your insights.

We are thrilled to have welcomed over 400 new and returning Course Representatives to our team, and we eagerly anticipate the arrival of those who will join us in January.

We will continue to offer sessions for you to connect with us online and on the main campus until the winter break. If you are unable to attend any of these sessions, feel free to email: representation@tees-su.org.uk, and the appropriate School Rep team will respond.

Wishing you all a wonderful break! Remember to take some time for yourself. Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates it, and a Happy New Year to one and all!
We look forward to seeing you in 2025!

Student Safety Tips

  • Your SU works closely with the University and a range of external agencies such as Cleveland Police, Cleveland Fire and the NHS to try to keep all students safe and well. Check out our tips for staying safe and reducing the chance of being affected by crime over the festive period below:
  • We know that the holidays are not always a happy time for everyone, so if you do need urgent support over the period, remember there is still lots of support; just a phone call, download, or walk away from you. If you or someone else is in an emergency situation (including a severe mental health crisis), ALWAYS call 999 IMMEDIATELY. You can also contact your local crisis team in a mental health emergency. If you are in Middlesbrough over the holidays, the number is 0800 0516 171, and they operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are based at Roseberry Park on Marton Road, Middlesbrough and will speak to you about your current needs and explore ways to support you. You can also find out more by clicking here. In less serious circumstances, you may also want to consider using the Student Assistance Programme, about which you can find out more by clicking here; the service can be contacted through 0800 0283766.
  • If you leave your accommodation over the festive period, ensure that any valuables you leave are securely locked away and all entrances/ vehicles are locked.
  • If you have a burglar alarm, ensure it is set.
  • You might also consider asking a neighbour you trust to keep an eye on your accommodation while you are away.
  • Ensure all taps and powered items that do not need to remain on are fully turned off.
  • It is a big time for socialising, and we hope everyone has a great time. However, please drink responsibly and be on the lookout for drink spiking. Additionally, we strongly advise that you avoid all illegal drugs, especially if they are supplied by someone you do not know.
  • NEVER drink/ take drugs and drive.
  • If you are going to be away for the day or a longer period, why not let housemates, neighbours or close friends know where you are going and when they should expect you back.
  • If you haven't already, it is well worth downloading the Cleveland Online Policing App (COPA) and Safezone app.
